2025 Prescribed Burn

The Army is Planning to Conduct a Prescribed Burn in 2025.

As part of the ongoing environmental cleanup at the former Fort Ord, the U.S. Army (Army) is preparing to conduct a prescribed burn in 2025. The area designated for a prescribed burn is Unit A, which is located in the Fort Ord National Monument and enclosed by Lion’s Revenge Road, Hennekens Ranch Road, West Machine Gun Flats Road, and Watkins Gate Road. The prescribed burn season at the former Fort Ord runs from July to December. During this timeframe the prescribed burn could take place when all conditions align. Suitable weather conditions typically occur in the fall months.

Prescribed burning is an important component of the munitions cleanup program at Fort Ord. It is used to remove vegetation within a munitions cleanup area to expose the ground surface for the unexploded ordnance technicians to safely conduct the removal action.  Prescribed burning is required to encourage successful recovery of the rare, threatened and endangered fire-dependent species. These prescribed burns also help reduce wildfire risk to our communities.

The Army offers a Direct Notification Program to notify pre-registered community members with prescribed burn updates via email, text, and/or by automated telephone message. Three messages will be sent for the burn event:

  1. when equipment and personnel have been mobilized and a prescribed burn could occur within a day or two,
  2. when the prescribed burn is started, and
  3. when the prescribed burn is complete.

To receive these notifications, interested community members must sign up for the Direct Notification Program by completing this form or by calling toll free at 800-852-9699. The Army will not share your contact information. Please note, even if you have registered in previous years, you must re-register each year.
