Why Is a Five-Year Review Conducted?

Superfund regulations require a review of cleanup actions every five years after the initiation of remedial actions if the remedy does not allow unrestricted use of the property.

What are the Main Questions that the Five-Year Review has to answer?

  • Are the remedies functioning as intended and as outlined in Records of Decision?
  • Are the assumptions used at the time of the remedy selection still valid?
  • Has any other information come to light that could call into question the protectiveness of the remedies?
